Here are some suggestions from members of the Katonah Study Group on how to use natural remedies and procedures to prevent and treat the Swine flu as well as the common flu:
Alexis Johnson:
Prevention: Gargle with Listerine or hydrogen peroxide or even salt water 3 X day
Swab nose with saline 2X day
Treatment: Isolate yourself and have the courtesy not to pass it on!
Dr Joe Ross, Holistic Vision Care, Brewster NY:
Prevention: Vitamin "D" during flu season oral 5000 - 6000 units daily, if in normal health and living in the North with minimal sun tanning opportunity.
Low Carb diet,
Avoid Sugar,
Avoid all preserved foods,
Be sure to get aerobic exercise at least 1 hr 5 days a week if health adequate.
Treatment: High Dosage of Vitamin "D"- The dose of vitamin D you can use would be 2,000 units per kilogram of body weight (one pound is 0.45 kg). The dose would be taken once a day for three days. (as recommended by Dr Joseph Mercola)
Nac ( N-ACETYL CYSTEINE) 600 mg 1 - 2x daily
Echinacea & Goldenseal -- 2 caps of 450mg each ingredient 3x daily with food for symptoms and to speed up recovery.
David Charon:
A "zapper" constructed based on the work of Dr. Hulda Clark:
The basis of the zapper is that certain frequencies of low voltage direct current, when applied to the body, destroy virtually any pathogen, while leaving the beneficial organisms and healthy cells intact.

Cynthia Schwartzberg:
As suggested by Herbalist Terry Anya Hayes.
Sambucol: contains elderberry syrup which stops many viruses from replicating.
Raw garlic is a good antiviral.
Andrea Candee, MH, MSC:
Mucoccinum : This is not the “Oscillo” product you see in health food stores. This comes from Canada and is a homeopathic flu preventative. You take 1 tablet every 2 weeks during flu season. If you feel you are coming down with the flu you take a tablet 2-3 times a day. It’s a terrific product. Must be taken 20 minutes away from food/drink. ½ dose for children under 12.
Nutriferon: A great immune enhancer. Stimulates production of interferon in the body. Good for people whose stress tends to make them prone to getting sick more often.
Echinacea : This is the first medicinal herbal I go for when feeling like something’s coming. It must be in the liquid, alcohol extract form Take 1/2 teaspoon diluted in a little water every 2 hours. I even keep a dose next to my bedside for when I wake up during the night.
If symptoms develop, continue taking the Echinacea every 2 hours for a day or two, then 1 tsp – 3 times a day for a few days to diminish duration and severity of symptoms. (for children’s dosing, see my book, Gentle Healing for Baby and Child (Simon & Schuster).
Vitamin C : I take this concurrently with Echinacea as it enhances the action of Echinacea. I take 1000mg every 2 hours to bowel tolerance. That means you know you've taken too much when it causes diarrhea.
Probiotics : these are the bacterial cultures that help keep beneficial bacteria active in your intestines. Dose according to bottle instructions - take 2-3 times a day.
Goldenseal : A dropperful, diluted in a little water or juice makes a great antibacterial and antiviral therapy...can be taken 3-4 times a day up to 10 days when symptoms present.
Dr. Christopher's Immune Formula : a great anti-everything and high in garlic so it could be used instead of the garlic mentioned above. Tastes like salad dressing (due to its apple cider vinegar content) and can be put in food or diluted in water or juice. For an adult, a teaspoon 2-3 times a day, ½ that dose for children.
Vitamin D3: Vitamin D3 acts as an immune system modulator, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and anti-viral. recommended dose 2000 IU, twice a day,
Ingrid Bacci PhD, CST:
Keep a clean house,
Get plenty of exercise,
Eat an abundance of vegetables and fruits, mostly raw or steamed,
Avoid ALL processed foods, but especially all dairy, wheat, sugar and caffeinated products
Christine Sotmary :
Acupuncture: The divergent meridians are the shock absorbers of our body and support the immune and hormonal systems. I use the first level of these meridians to do what I call an Immune Booster Treatment. 3 weekly treatments are required and so far none of my clients has had even a sniffle.
Lila Taylor:From Alternative Approaches to Preventing the Flu , by Dr. Gary Null and Melissa Karp
Plenty of water bolsters the immune system by flushing toxins from the body and keeping the respiratory system moist.
Getting enough sleep (seven of more hours a night).
Selenium and zinc maintain a healthy immune system
Green tea boosts immunity and has a strong antioxidant effect.
Ginseng reduces the incidence, duration and severity of colds and flu.
Oil of Oregano has antiviral, antifungal, antibacterial, antiparasitic, antioxidant and anti ‐ inflammatory effects.
Grape seed extract has a very strong antioxidant effect and boosts immunity.
